Board of Education Goals

2010-11 School Year

We believe in preparing each student physically, socially, emotionally, and academically for graduation, and in providing each student with the needed tools, knowledge and confidence to be a successful, well-rounded and productive member of society.  We, as an educational community, are dedicated to promoting student success by offering a variety of opportunities that encourage academic, social, and cultural growth.

  • Improve academic performance of all students.
  • Improve student attendance.
  • Keep pace with technology, taking into account the needs of the district.
  • Increase students’ engagement with their school lives.
  • Promote parent/guardian/community engagement in student’s education.
  • Increase graduation rate.
  • Use statistical analysis, research-based practice and existing data systems to evaluate the success of programs e.g. attendance, academic performance and graduation rates
  • Recognize the interconnectedness of the factors that lead to student achievement.

 

 

We believe that a sense of self-worth and mutual respect will enable students to continue their journey as autonomous individuals and life-long learners. We believe that it is every individual’s responsibility to act as a role model showing our school and community that through respect, kindness, diligence and integrity, high achievement can be attained.

  • Identify targeted areas of staff development aligned with board goals.
  • Continue to emphasize the importance of communication and writing skills for the entire school community.
  • Continue to recruit and retain quality staff.
  • Continue to work toward a school culture of empathy and respect.
  • Prepare students for transitions into elementary school and from elementary to middle to high school to college/work.

 

We value a safe and nurturing environment, during all school related activities and on the buses, that promotes open communication, mutual care and respect, and that promotes the physical, psychological, and emotional safety of all students, staff and community members.

  • Implement and evaluate the updated district safety plan and provide information to parents about safety procedures.
  • Provide hands-on opportunities for entire school community to learn and practice safety procedures.
  • Ensure that all safety procedures are followed.
  • Continue to promote the importance of recognizing, reporting and preventing harassment, bullying and other forms of discrimination and disrespect for others.

 

 

We believe in providing a quality education for our students while practicing fiscal responsibility for the benefit of the school district and community.

  • Pursue innovative ways to offer cost effective curricular options.
  • Keep up to date on state and federal legislation, budget decisions, and state/federal aid as part of budget development.
  • Seek opportunities for grants and alternative funding sources to support district programs.
  • Explore energy savings and “green” initiatives.
  • Explore efficiencies and cost savings where possible in utilization of resources, staff and facilities.
  • Continue to evaluate, update and implement five-year facilities plan in light of economic challenges.

  

 

We believe in the importance of respect, honesty, pride, and the acceptance of diversity among all individuals within the entire school community. We believe parents, district employees, students and residents of the district have an ongoing shared responsibility to ensure individual student success through mutual respect, active and engaging communication, and cooperation.

  • Continue to support programs that foster diversity as a “cultural expectation” and work to eliminate social and cultural barriers.
  • Promote the social and emotional adjustment of families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Develop a communications plan to:
    • Improve advance notice to local media regarding school and district activities.    
    • Improve communication with the community about programs and accomplishments of students, staff and volunteers.
    • Invite parent and community volunteer participation in educational programs and school activities.
    • Increase informal opportunities for board members to meet and talk with the public throughout the year.
  • Maintain transparency in all communications.
