7th Grade Math
At the 7th grade level, students concentrate on nine main topics: How to display
Data/Statistics, Number Sense, Decimals, Fractions, Solving Equations,
Proportions, Geometry and Probability. Specific skills associated with each of
these topics are covered throughout the year. As 8th graders, these students
will be taking a State Exam in math. This exam consists of numerous extended
response questions and word problems. In order to start preparing for this exam,
students work on an opener everyday at the beginning of class. Most of these
openers are word problems and review questions. Students also receive a Warm-Up
every week to help them retain and reinforce topics covered this year and in
previous years. At the end of the 10 weeks, the Warm-Up grades count as a
50-point quiz. Homework counts approximately 20% of the student's quarterly
grade. Assignments are checked for completion and appropriate work being shown
on the paper each day. Students do not lose credit for errors made on homework
assignments. All students start each quarter with a homework grade of 100% and
can maintain this grade by using the following scale for missing/incomplete
assignments: 0-3 = 100%, 4-6 = 70%, 7-9 = 50% and 10+ = 0%. The goal is to get
students to try and complete their homework. Practice will reinforce skills
taught in school. The remaining part of a student's grade is made up of tests
and quizzes.

7th Grade Foreign Language
There are several main topics that are covered during the first year of foreign
language. Students will receive the same course whether it is in Spanish or
French. The topics include: house/home, family life, meals, health, school life,
occupations, personal descriptions, neighborhood, leisure, shopping and travel.
These topics will be taught using a variety of teaching methods to accommodate
for the different learning styles of students. Students will read together, use
flashcards, listen to tapes, watch language and culture videos, act out skits,
sing, draw and label in French or Spanish, use computer games (i.e., Take-a-Hike
Through France), and several other interesting approaches to learn the new
language. There will be a mid-term exam near the end of January and a final exam
in June. At the end of the 8th grade, students will be given a State Proficiency
Exam. The successful completion of this exam will earn 1 high school credit for
the student. This credit is the minimal level of foreign language required for
high school graduation. Many students will go on to take a Regents in foreign
language during 10th grade.
